Double glazing

When you consider that the average UK home loses approximately 10% to 25% of its heat through its windows, it becomes clear why thermal performance is a priority for homeowners in Cheltenham and across Gloucestershire.

Since Albany Windows was established in 1999, our founders, Peter and David, have seen glazing technology move forward at an incredible pace. With a combined 70 years of industry experience, we have helped thousands of customers transition from draughty, outdated frames to high-performance solutions.

But to make an informed investment, it helps to understand the science behind the extra pane of glass used in double glazing. In this blog we explore how double glazed windows work to keep your home warm and reduce your reliance on central heating, making your energy costs manageable.

What is double glazing?

At its most basic level, double glazing consists of two window panes of glass set into a single frame to create a sealed unit that forms an insulating barrier. Unlike a single glazed window, which relies on a solitary pane of glass to act as a barrier against the elements, double glazing uses a multi-layered approach. There are a few visible signs that indicate a window is double glazed: often, you can see a slight gap or spacer bar between two panes of glass when looking at the window edge-on. In some cases, a faint reflection caused by the two layers of glass may be visible under certain lighting.

The gap between these two glass panes is the secret to its success. By creating a literal “sandwich” of glass and air (or gas), the window becomes a far more effective insulator than any single material could be on its own.

The anatomy of energy efficiency: how double glazing works

The primary goal of a modern window is to limit heat transfer. and reduce heat gain. In the winter, you want to keep warm air inside; in the summer, you want to block excessive solar heat from entering.

Double glazing achieves this through a process called thermal insulation. The space between the inner pane and the outer pane is usually between 16mm and 20mm wide. This gap is filled with an inert gas, typically argon gas. Because argon is denser than air, it is much less conductive, meaning it slows down the movement of heat significantly. This keeps warm air inside during the winter and outside during the summer.

To keep these layers perfectly positioned, a spacer bar is used around the perimeter. In the past, these were often made of aluminium, but modern “warm-edge” spacer bars use insulating composites. This ensures that the edge of the glass stays warm, preventing the “cold bridge” that often led to heavy moisture or even ice forming on the inside of older windows.

Heat retention

The most immediate benefit of installing replacement windows is the reduction of heat loss. When your home is fitted with modern double glazing, the gas layer acts as a thermal blanket that ensures less heat is lost. According to data from the Energy Saving Trust, upgrading from single glazing or older double glazing to A-rated replacement windows can save a typical semi-detached home hundreds of pounds a year on energy bills.

Reduced condensation

Condensation occurs when warm, moist air hits a cold surface, turning water vapour into liquid. Because the inner pane of a double glazed unit is protected by the argon gas and the outer pane, it stays much closer to the internal room temperature. This significantly reduces the likelihood of moisture forming on your windows, helping prevent unsightly water droplets, damp and mould growth around your frames.

Noise reduction

If you live near a busy Gloucestershire road or a noisy town centre, noise reduction is a major advantage. Sound travels in waves; as these sound waves hit the first pane of glass, they are dampened. They then have to travel through the inert gas before hitting the second pane. This process disrupts the vibration, improving sound insulation and making your home a much quieter, more peaceful environment. For those seeking even higher levels of silence, triple glazing or specialised acoustic glass can offer further protection.

The verdict on thermal performance: how efficient are they really?

The short answer is: very! At Albany Windows, we ensure our installations of uPVC windows achieve impressively low U-values – the metric used to calculate how much heat escapes through a material. The lower the U-value, the better insulation the window is at insulating your home. This means our products provide better insulation for energy efficiency.

Whether we are performing a simple repair of misted sealed units or installing a full house of new windows, our focus is on ensuring every product delivers maximum energy efficiency. Modern frames now feature multi-chambered designs that trap air inside the frame itself, adding yet another layer of protection against the cold air outside.
